You don’t have to compromise to make your home exactly what you want, these tips will help you save on your home decor budget without sacrificing your vision!
Whether you’re just starting with decorating a new home or it’s time to update your existing decor, the associated cost can be very daunting and might even have you holding on to that farmhouse chic kitchen that you’ve been ready to change for 2 years already. So how can you update your decor without changing everythingout and cleaning out your home decor budget? It’s totally doable… it just takes a little bit of patience, inspiration, creativity and bravery!
5 Clever Ways to Save on Your Home Decor Budget
Don’t Be Afraid of a Thrift, Yard Sale or Dollar Store Find
You really have to shift your mindset when you’re thrifting or perusing a yard sale or else you will likely come up empty handed time and again. More than likely, there won’t be a lot of amazing decor items that you see and immediately fall in love with, or that perfectly fit the new design theme you’re going for as-is right off the shelf. But if you shop with an open mind, you might find the perfect accent that is screaming to be upcycled to become a showpiece in your home.
Think about the sizes shapes that will fit into your new design scheme and keep an eye out for those elements as your primary focus since color and texture can be changed with a little makeover action. This rope basketI transformed from a dollar store basket is one of my favorite home accessories!
Shop Your Home
This is one of my favorite tricks. And when I say tricks, I mean a trick that I play on myself! It’s so easy to get into a rut seeing the same decor in the same grouping/spot/room and lump it in with all of the rest of the decor in that grouping, spot or room. When you take a decoration or accessory out of its element, it can become like new again… sometimes with just a little bit of updating or sometimes by simply moving it! I especially love this trick for transforming everyday decor into seasonal decor without having to pull out a ton of seasonal decorations every season. Remember that rope basket? I gave it a simple seasonal update for winter with an easy DIY sweater makeover!
Get Creative!
When we moved in to our house I had my heart set on a beautiful wallpaper I had seen online for our half bath. After learning that it was $450/roll I decided my heart needed to get un-set real fast! Even though it would have just taken one roll since the half bath is small, that would have taken a big chunk out of my overall home decor budget and I just wasn’t ready to spend that kind of money on one wall in a rarely used half bath. So I decided I could paint and stencil the accent wall for a very similar effect and I love how it turned out (that’s it below). If you have your heart set on something that falls outside of your budget, brainstorm how you can DIY it!
Ditch the All or Nothing Thinking
This is one I have to remind myself of often. And by often I mean alllllthe time! For example, I teeter-totter quite often with which metals I’m obsessed with at any given moment… sometimes it’s silver/pewter/nickel and sometimes it’s brass/gold/champagne. I have to resist the urge to replace all the silver with all the gold or vice-versa every time this whim strikes. For one thing in this case, mixed metals are having a major trend moment right now and can play really beautifully off of each other. For another thing, even if I did want to have everything gold, it doesn’t mean that all the silver has to go. Many things can be made to go with a new decor or color scheme by just giving them a couple coats of paint.
Don’t Settle
Don’t feel like you have find and buy everything at once! Not only will it drain your home decor budget, but it’s highly unlikely that you will find everything that you truly love in one go and then you’ll probably be feeling like you want a do-over within a year. Wait for the things that you see and have a visceral reaction to that you know you have to have. Obviously some things like furniture are a neccessity so if you don’t find pieces that you love right away, CORT Furniture Clearance Center is a great option to give you beautiful furniture (on demand!) that you can enjoy while you look for exactly what you want. I LOVE these tips. So many people think home redecorating means spending thousands and thousands of dollars.
It doesn’t have to! Don’t be afraid to check your local thrift stores, consignment stores, yard sales, etc. You also do a great job talking about letting go of the “All Or Nothing” mentality which a lot of people have. We have to learn to be realistic.
