Create a beautiful sweater basket to store your throw blankets, pillows or any other clutter you want to corral!

My metallic rope basket is one of the most popular posts on my site; I love it too but I feel like it needs a winter sweater. I mean, it’s February. It’s cold! I love having a basket by the fireplace to house my throw blankets and the body of this sweater leftover from my Christmas Joy sign is perfect for my fireplace hearth. It’s easy to make one in any style sweater you’d like!

Repurposed Sweater Basket

Supplies

  • Large size sweater (should be a tight weave)
  • Laundry basket
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Washable fabric marker
  • Sewing machine
  • Fabric or sheet for lining

Thrift store sweater

Directions

Begin by cutting off the sleeves of the sweater.

Sleeveless sweater

Pin along the arm holes and sew.

Sew sweater sleeve holes together

Slide the sweater over the basket with the neck of the sweater at the bottom. Pull the sweater taut at the bottom and pin at the base.

Sew sweater collar closed at bottom of sweater basket

Pull the sweater back off of the basket and mark along the pins with a washable fabric marker.

Mark off top of sweater to sew

Remove pins and replace them vertically along the line marked with the fabric marker and sew. Cut above seam.

Cut off bottom of sweater basket

Pull the sweater back over the basket and pull in the sides (where the armpits of the sweater are). Pin and sew.

Pin sides of sweater basket

To create a liner for the basket, I doubled up an old white sheet and pinned the sweater basket cover to it and cut around the sweater basket cover. Pin and sew along the side edges (don’t sew the flat side).

Cut out lining of sweater basket

Sweater basket liner

Turn the sweater basket liner right side out and place into the sweater basket; fold over any excess material to the outside of the basket to keep it securely in place.

Slide the sweater basket cover up onto the basket and tuck any excess material (in this case, the waist band of the sweater) inside of the basket.

And that’s it!

If you’ve hung out with me on the blog before you know I don’t really sew, so this does not require any expert sewing skills! But side note: my no-sew status is changing, stay tuned, I got a new Bernette 38 sewing machine that I can’t wait to learn with!

What do you think of my basket’s winter outfit? 😉 What would you want to store in your sweater basket?

This inspired me to repurpose other baskets too. Old clothes & fabric are a great idea and keeps our environment from excessive waste.

[…] It may be Captain Obvious, but nonetheless, a cozy throw blanket makes an excellent Winter gift. Throws are not only functional (and absolutely necessary right now in Ohio), they also act as lovely decor (once you master that perfectly messy draped throw on the couch). Anytime I see a cable knit throw like this one I always feel like it is screaming my name to cuddle in it! Bonus points if you gift it in this sweater throw basket! […]
