Treat yourself or a friend with these DIY fizzy bath salts! The printable label makes this a perfect gift idea.
The idea for my fizzy unicorn bath salts was born from my love of DIY beauty products and the unicorn theme from the SNAP conference I attended in April. I think unicorns have replaced the “rainbows and butterflies” description of utopia… who can resist some bright colors and a cute horse with horns?! It almost dares you to try to be in a bad mood. I’ll take your bad mood and raise you one unicorn!
Unicorns in and of themselves invite happy but when paired with these fizzy bath salts it’s all out bliss! They smell amazing, create a delightful frothy bath experience and make your skin feel as soft as a baby’s. I’m sure you agree that means win-win and win. So let’s make you some!
If you’re more team mermaid, check out these pretty Mermaid Fizzing Bath Salts, too!
Several of the steps mirror my Easter egg bath bombs but these are instant gratification, no waiting for molds to set up!
Unicorn Fizzy Bath Salts
Supplies (affiliate links provided)
- 1 cup baking soda
- 1 cup epsom salt
- ½ cup citric acid
- ½ cup corn starch
- 3 tablespoons fractionated coconut oil
- Essential oils (see step #2 for quantity)
- Soap colorantÂ
- Airtight glass jar (I used a 1 L size jar for this quantity of bath salts)
- Free printable label and sticker paper
Directions
- Add all dry ingredients to a large bowl and whisk together.
- Slowly add coconut oil and essential oil to the dry mixture, whisking immediately. Be sure not to add any wet ingredients all at once or it will start to fizz like an alka-seltzer. If using pure essential oil, add just one drop to each bowl; otherwise use 3 – 4 drops. I love DoTerra oils, the purity is unparalleled (I can’t believe how you can actually smell the difference but you can. You will need much less quantity if you use those… I’ve had the same bottle of Lavender for a year and a half and have made countless, scrubs, bath bombs, bath salt, etc.
- Separate the mixture into 4 bowls.
- Add 3 – 4 drops of soap coloring to each bowl (1 drop at a time) and mix well.
- Layer each color in an airtight container, gently pressing the fizzy bath salts down to make a level surface for the next layer.
Whether you make these fizzy bath salts for yourself or your favorite unicorn, they absolutely need this adorable label, don’t you think? Download it free and print on sticker paper! If you can’t get enough of the unicorn cuteness, you can buy the whole clipart set that goes along with this darling on etsy for just a buck!
I hope you have a wonderful weekend filled with at least 1 fizzy bath! 😉

Stephanie says
Hey! Just wondering if you use regular food coloring is their a possibility of staining the bathtub? I wanted to do these for party favors but didn’t want to ruin anyone’s tub with food coloring stains!!! Thank you
Lydia says
Hi Stephanie! I’ve never heard of that happening but I think using cosmetic pigment or soap dye is probably the safest route to make sure it doesn’t happen. 🙂
Corey says
Just wondering if anyone has experienced the bath salts hardening after a few days? Is there something in this mixture that prevents this from happening?
Lydia says
Hi Corey! Not that I have heard, but I know that it can harden if exposed to air or humidity. Do you have a different air-tight jar you could put them in?
Krista says
I am planning to make these as favours for my daughter’s party. How far in advance do you suggest I make them without the risk of having them harden in the jar?
Lydia says
Hi Krista, what a fun idea! As long as they are in air-tight jars they shouldn’t harden so you can make them as far in advance as you’d like. Enjoy! 🙂
Jess says
Hi Ladies,
I want to do a similar idea with my Guide unit – what size jars did you use Krista and how many did it make?
I’m having about 20 girls and are probably going to use smaller jars but don’t know how many times I will need to increase the recipe.
Janice Key says
Hi Lydia
Thank you so much for sharing your recipe. It is summer school holidays here in Australia so my great granddaughter made some of your unicorn bath salts today turned out great and so much fun.
Cheers
janice
Lydia says
How fun! Thanks so much Janice, enjoy them! 🙂
Alyssa says
How do you get the food coloring to mix? Mine keeps clumping and won’t mix in.
Lydia says
Hi Alyssa! If it’s clumping you can mix with your hands to break up any clumps. I hope that helps!
Brianna says
Hi Lydi! I was planning to make this for my friends! Will the mixure work without Ebsom salt! Thank you so much! Great DIY!💓
Lydia says
Hi Brianna! It would still fizz but it won’t have the skin softening effect that the epsom salt gives. Thanks so much, I hope your friends love it! All of mine did! 😉
Lori says
I made these today, I even changed the colors up to make some for my grandson. I used DoTerra oils also.
Lydia says
I love that! Thanks so much for letting me know Lori! I hope everyone loved them and that you had a wonderful holiday! 🙂
Mandy says
Has anyone ever tried to add a body glitter? If so how did it go?
Lydia says
Hi Mandy! I haven’t heard from anyone who tried adding glitter, I would say it depends on whether it’s safe to use all over the body since it would get EVERYWHERE in a bath. 😉
Kathy says
Glitter might get into the children’s eyes. The glitters very sharp and can cause eye damage.
Lydia says
Hi Kathy! I don’t use glitter in these bath salts.
Eleanor A Connolly says
Good morning Lydia,
Your colors are amazing. I was wondering what you used to color your bath salts. The colors I have/use, seem to take a lot to get any color at all. So, is there a specific brand and a place you purchase them that you like/use?
Thanks!
Ellie
Lydia says
Hi Ellie, thank you so much! I started out just using food coloring, then soap colorant but now I’m using cosmetic pigments. Mineral eye shadows work great!
Amy says
Hi, I was wondering the same thing as Eleanor. What did you use at the time to color the unicorn bath salts in the picture on your website. They are beautiful. I was hoping to buy the same ones.
Lydia says
Hi Amy! I actually used food coloring for the first round. That will yield the most vibrant color.
Melanie Sanchez says
Lydia,
Did it stain your tub?? I want the vibrant color but im scared the food coloring will ruin my tub haha
Lydia says
Hey Melanie! Nope it sure didn’t (I have a porcelain tub).
Lee-Anne Ouimette says
Can I use regular food coloring that I buy in grocery store. Or do I have to purchase from specialty shop.
Lydia says
Hi Lee-Anne! You can definitely use grocery store food coloring! Enjoy! 🙂
Lisa says
Hi Lydia – I am looking to make these as my daughters party favours/bags. I have 12 to make and am looking at using small jam jars. Judging by one of your comments I will need to x by 3-4 would that be right?
Also do you use the same oil in all colours? Or could you blend? I also love the Doterra oils and was thinking lavender peppermint and wild orange.
Lydia says
Hi Lisa! That is such a fun idea! Yes, I think x 3 would be perfect, or x 4 to save a little for yourself! 😉 You can definitely blend oils! Any combo that you like together would be great… I haven’t tried your combo but it sounds delightful, those are 3 of my favorites! I just made some with Serenity blended with Lavender for a friend and they smelled amazing! Enjoy and I’d love to see pics of your favors and party! 🙂
Angie I says
Hello,
I plan to make these ahead of time and give them away as party favors. I saw in one of the messages that you said then mixture will harden if made more then 15 minutes prior. Will it harden in the jar once it’s made? I’m just wondering if the girls will have a hard time getting it out of the jar for a bath at a later date.
Thank you
Lydia says
Hi Angie! I love that idea! No, it won’t harden at all as long as the jar is air tight and the salts don’t get wet inside of the jar. Enjoy! 🙂
Tess says
What size jars did you use? I have 3 Oz jars? How many would this recipe make?
Lydia says
Hi Tess! I used a 20 oz jar and it was all the way full so you should be able to get 6 jars with your size. Enjoy! 🙂
Nicole says
We just made this tonight, both my sons wanted to make it also, so we altered the color a bit for the boys and my oldest did black yellow and blue for batman and my younger did red yellow and green for iron man and the Incredible Hulk. They can’t wait to try them out tomorrow. Thank you for sharing this it was a blast to make!
Lydia says
Hi Nicole! Ok this just made my day! How cute, what fun ideas!!! I’d love to hear how they liked them! Thanks for sharing that, such a creative idea! 🙂
Erin Corbett says
Such a cute idea! I’m using this for my daughter’s birthday party- the girls will make this then take it home. How far in advance can I make the mixture up? I have other activities so want to just set the bowls out when ready and the kids can scoop them into their containers.
Thanks,
Erin C
Lydia says
Erin! What a fun idea, I love it! You can mix all of the dry ingredients as far an advance as you want (just keep in an airtight container to keep moisture and humidity out). The wet ingredients can’t be added more than 15 or so minutes in advance because it will make the mixture harden. Have fun, I would LOVE to see photos of the girls making them! 🙂
Erin Corbett says
Hi Lydia,
I misjudged my ordering! I’ve made 4 batches/colors of the salts for my party and each batch I made 8X the recipe. I’m short on the coconut oil- is there a substitute???? Another oil maybe? I don’t think I have time to order more- OR….is there a retail place I can get it? I’ve never seen it and don’t even know where to look. Thanks,
Erin
Also, how much food coloring is needed per recipe? I won’t mix the wet ingredients until the day of the party but want to make sure I have enough.
Lydia says
Hi Erin! Well on the bright side you’ll have plenty left over for yourself and your friends! 🙂 You can find the oil at some CVS stores or the Vitamin Store if you have one of those nearby. You could also use almond oil or grapeseed oil if need be. Even though you made a much larger batch, I would still suggest mixing it with the wet ingredients in smaller batches to keep the mixture from hardening through the time it would take to integrate the oils and food coloring into such a large batch. 2 – 3 drops of food coloring should do but you can adjust how you’d like the colors to look. I hope this makes sense? If not, please feel free to shoot me an email and we can talk through it.
Erin says
Where did you find the jars and spoon?
Lydia says
Hi Erin! I just recently saw some of these exact jars at Dollar Tree but I got mine at Hobby Lobby (their glass decor goes on sale for 50% every other week). The spoon is a coffee spoon that I got at a thrift store. Thanks for reading and if you try it I hope you enjoy! 🙂
Jessyca says
Will the food coloring stain the tub?
Lydia says
Hi Jessyca! It didn’t stain mine which is a standard porcelain tub. Enjoy! 🙂
Julie says
How many jars does this recipe make approximately?
Lydia says
Hi Julie! It makes about 1 and 1/2 jars of the size I used (large). I have fit the quantity into 3 small jars before too. Enjoy! 🙂
Marie says
Omgosh, I love this! So stinkin’ cute, I don’t know if I’d want to use them. Can I just dress up my bathroom with the full jar? Lol. Thanks for sharing your DIY with us at Merry Monday this week!
Lydia says
Thanks so much Marie! And yes you sure can, maybe one to display and one to use? 😉 Have a great weekend!
Armani says
Mine came out so cute, I used cheer me up buttercup essential oil
Lydia says
