Bring out your inner Mermaid with these fun and fizzy DIY Bath Salts! Add customized labels and gift tags to make them a perfect gift idea.
A few years ago I made Unicorn Fizzy Bath Salts and gave them out as gifts and they were quite a hit! Mermaids are kind of the new unicorns so I decided it was time to make some Fizzy Mermaid DIY Bath Salts. I actually came up with the idea because I had some bath bomb fails from my initial batch of Easter Egg Bath Bombs that I didn’t want to go to waste. I love being able to get use out of failed projects!
To make these Mermaid DIY bath salts, you can use bath bombs or you can make your own fizzing bath salts with my Unicorn Fizzy Bath Salts recipe. You can find a printable instruction card at the bottom of this post. Or of course if you happen to have any DIY bath bomb fails around like I did, feel free to use those. 😉
I like to make my DIY bath salts with essential oils for aromatherapy, but you can omit them if you don’t like a scented bath soak.
Tip: If you want to make Mermaid Bath Salts sans DIY, here’s a great hack: Buy some pre-made bath salt. Separate it into 3 or 4 cups and add soap colorant to each cup in varying shades of blue, turquoise and violet.
Mix them together and they look like beautiful sea glass!
How to Make Fizzing Mermaid DIY Bath Salts
If you’re starting out with actual bath bombs like I did, put them inside of a heavy duty zipper bag. Seal the bag as flat as possible to limit the air in the bag. Hammer the heck out of them until they are pulverized. This was more fun than I should admit. 😉
Something I like about this method is that I got 2 completely different looking fizzing bath salts. I sifted the hammered DIY bath bombs which left me with some bath salt that was think and chunky and some that was fine and powder-like.
And if you want to make your own:
Fizzing Homemade Bath Salts Recipe
Supplies
- 1 cup baking soda
- 1 cup epsom salt
- ½ cup citric acid
- ½ cup corn starch
- 3 tablespoons fractionated coconut oil
- Essential oils (see step #2 for quantity)
- Soap colorant (assorted shades of blue, purple and I added a dash or coral for contrast)
- Airtight glass jars
Directions
- Add all dry ingredients to a large bowl and whisk together.
- Slowly add coconut oil and essential oil to the dry mixture, whisking immediately. Be sure not to add any wet ingredients all at once or the mermaid bath soak will start to fizz like an alka-seltzer. If using pure essential oil, add just one drop to each bowl; otherwise use 3 – 4 drops. I love DoTerra oils, the purity is unparalleled (I can’t believe how you can actually smell the difference but you can. You will need much less quantity if you use those… I’ve had the same bottle of Lavender for a year and a half and have made countless, scrubs, bath bombs, bath salt, etc.
- Separate the mixture into 3 – 4 bowls (or as many colors as you’d like to have in your fizzy mermaid bath salt).
- Add 3 – 4 drops of soap coloring to each bowl (1 drop at a time) and mix well.
- Allow to dry a little (for about 15 minutes) and then combine the colors together. Think of folding the colors together like making cookies. Too much mixing will make your Mermaid Bath Salts look like they came from a swamp instead of the ocean.
Of course these Mermaid Fizzy Bath Salts are a wonderful way to treat yourself, but they also make awesome gifts. I had so much fun with my Cricut making gift tags and labels for them. These Fizzy Mermaid Bath Salts are ready for gifting! Of course I’ll sneak in a bath or 2 for myself, too. 😉
