I know I just said salted caramel signals the arrival of fall, but now I’m saying something else signals its arrival… something much less tasty. Colds. Ugh. Let me say that again. Ugh.
Whenever I get sick, I think back to being a kid and my mom making me toast (and cutting off the crust for me, of course), putting a warm or cool wash cloth on my forehead (whichever temperature appropriate for my ailment) and some type of Vick’s… either the steam or rub variety. This cold season is no different. In fact, in a desperate act I actually went and bought a vaporizer with Vick’s hoping for some menthol induced relief. Maybe it’s because mom didn’t lovingly plug it in for me and fill it up, but it didn’t have the magic ability it did when I was a kid. Here comes another one… Ugh! I promise that’s the last ugh.
Since the steam didn’t work and the rub is a little more than I can handle (I mean it’s soooo thick and medicinal smelling!), I decided to try to achieve the same relief through a DIY linen spray. My lavender pillow spray is one of my favorite indulgences, so perhaps a eucalyptus version will banish my stuffy head?
Sure enough, it delivered! Breathing relief was nearly instantaneous and I slept through the night without feeling like I was being suffocated. Win. Here’s how to make it:
Soothing Congestion Relief Linen Spray
- Add ¾ cup of distilled water into a spray bottle
- Add about a half cap full of 100% Pure Eucalyptus Essential Oil
to the water and shake well.
Shake before each use.
Done. Easier breathing ahead.
Want to give these out as gifts? You can get my printable labels here (I just used 2″ x 4″ shipping labels). Deliver these to sickly family and friends and they will praise your kindness! (But make sure to keep your distance and douce yourself with hand-sani after you leave! 😉 )
I stocked up on the spray bottles at Dollar Tree; they have a ton of body sprays there for… you guessed it, a dollar. I just dumped out the spray and filled them with my linen spray. Even empty spray bottles at the store cost more than a buck.
I hope that you’re so healthy this fall and winter that you don’t have to call these to the rescue, however they’re very enjoyable in both sickness and in health! Be well and thanks for reading!

I’m confused about how much oil to put in…half a cap. What size cap? The essential oil cap or the spray bottle cap?
Lydia says
Hi Austin! The essential oil cap.
Rebecca Giles says
Do the oils leave any stains on the linens?
Lydia says
Hi Rebecca! No they don’t, just make sure to shake it well before each use so that the oil mixes into the water. Enjoy! 🙂

Where do you purchase eucalyptus oil?
Lydia says
Hi there! I get mine on Amazon, if you click the link in the post it should take you right there. Enjoy! 🙂
Michelle Randall says
Did you really mean 1/2 a cup of essential oil? Isn’t that pricey?
Lydia says
Hi Michelle, the recipe is for a 1/2 CAP, wow yes a half CUP would be very pricey and so overwhelming! Thanks for clarifying and I hope you enjoy it! 🙂 Happy New Year!

Can’t wait to try this. I dread winter because of cold and colds.

Wow what a wonderful idea! I always get stuffy this time of year so this would be a great way to sleep with the pleasant aroma of fresh eucalyptus but also get some stuffiness relief!
Thanks Lydi!
