6 Ideas for Organizing Your Sewing Supplies

When you love to sew, it’s easy to let your collection of sewing supplies spiral out of control. Creating a dedicated organizational system allows you to find needles, thread, buttons, and other supplies without having to launch a full-scale treasure hunt every time you want to start a new pattern.

See-Through Storage

Transparent containers keep your supplies organized without obstructing your view of each container’s contents. Inexpensive plastic boxes work well for this purpose. Because they stack easily, they’re ideal when you’re short on space. Glass or plastic jars can also work well.

Plastic bins with dividers can help you keep small objects — such as buttons, beads, and zippers — separate. Consider investing in several containers of different sizes. The larger jars or bins can hold spools of thread, yards of fabric, and binders full of sewing patterns.

If you’re short on floor space, consider using vertical space to store your sewing supplies. A large pegboard offers almost limitless customization options, and you can hang it over a desk or craft table so you’ll have every item at arm’s length. You can find accessories in which to store buckets of felt-tipped markers, rolls of fabric, and closed containers filled with needles.

If pegboards seem too industrial for your taste, consider painting them. The pop of color will distract the eye from the board’s utilitarian appearance and add a dose of your personality to the project, whether you choose pale pink, lime green, or deep purple.

Rolling Carts

If you don’t always sew in the same place, a rolling cart might offer the best solution for organizing your supplies. You won’t have to lift heavy objects if you decide to sew in the kitchen instead of the living room, thanks to its handy casters. A multi-tiered rolling cart gives you more storage flexibility and provides you with a handy work surface, and you can use it for purposes other than sewing if you need to.

Toolbox

Repurposing an old (or new) toolbox might help you keep your smaller supplies more accessible. Most toolboxes feature many small compartments for organization, so you can fill them with bobbins, thread, tape, and pins instead of nails and screws.

Bathroom caddies and tackle boxes can also prove useful. If you prefer a softer option, you can repurpose a diaper bag or messenger bag, which will work well if you like to take your sewing supplies with you when you leave the house.

Consider using a curtain rod and a package of S-hooks to create your own hanging storage system. This idea works well for scissors, rotary cutters, packages of needles, bags of buttons, and other supplies. You can also hang small buckets from the S-hooks and fill the buckets with smaller products.

Jewelry Boxes

Large jewelry boxes can offer an attractive and practical option for keeping your sewing supplies organized. Shallow boxes are helpful if you want to store the box in a drawer or underneath a table, while multi-level boxes can provide even more storage space.
