See how to make a DIY Shiplap Sign with a Cricut Maker with this simple tutorial. It will be your most versatile piece of decor!
I think pretty much all of my favorite decorations have been touched by a Cricut in some way shape or form. I especially love cutting wood with my Cricut Maker. I love how intricate the Cricut Maker can get with it’s cuts. I’m pretty sure I held my breath the entire time it cut out my daughter’s 1st birthday cake topper, just waiting for it to fail. Oh Maker, why do I ever doubt you when you continue to blow my mind, time and again?
On the flip side, the wood cuts for this DIY Shiplap aren’t intricate so the cut time was super quick. A heck of a lot easier than pulling out my saw!
A DIY shiplap sign is so versatile… you can use it as a stand-alone wood sign or use it with a frame that you have or make.
Up to now I’ve been using mine inside of a frame with this hello design in different patterns of vinyl to make a seasonal wreath. I applied vinyl to basswood and cut it with the Cricut Maker, you can find that tutorial here).
If you don’t paint the panels of your shiplap sign, you can even use iron-on to add your design. Yep, if you haven’t tried it before you can absolutely iron onto wood and the results are awesome and completely seamless (see how to do it here).
For this shiplap wood sign I used my same boxwood wreath but instead of a frame, I just used the panels to make this “Everyone is Welcome” wreath (you can grab the cut file for this one here).
Are you ready to make your own shiplap sign? Here are the simple steps (with a printable instruction card below!)

- 12” x 6” Basswood
- White Craft Paint
- Paint brush

Directions
How to Cut the Shiplap Wood Panels
Open the Shiplap Sign cut file in Design Space. Customize as necessary to fit the size of your frame (if you’re using a frame).
Secure basswood to a strong grip with masking tape and move all star wheels all the way to the right.
Insert knife blade into the Maker. Cut.
Apply a light wash of white paint so that some of the wood can still peek through.
Painting hack: I use a mounting squares on a raised object to paint flat objects so that I can paint the sides and top without having to touch it at all!
How to Create the Shiplap Sign
Once the paint has dried, add a thin strand of adhesive on the front outer edges of the shiplap panels and place into the frame. Allow adhesive to dry thoroughly.
If you plan to use your shiplap sign without a frame, you can glue a smaller piece of basswood horizontally across the back of the sign to make sure the panels stay in place. Always hold onto your scraps, you’ll find tons of creative uses for them!
Now your shiplap sign is ready to decorate how you’d like. I’ve used the DIY wood signs I’ve made in so many capacities, in addition to my welcome wreath, I made this Hello Sunshine shiplap sign for our entryway. It’s perfect for our summer decor. You can find that cut file here.
