This DIY Fall Sign easily transitions to a Christmas sign by simply flipping it over. Display it on an entry table to attach some ribbon to make it a beautiful transitional wall hanging!

DIY Fall Sign to transition to DIY Christmas Sign!

When I think about fall and Christmas decor one of my favorite elements is texture… warm and cozy, raw and rustic, puffy and knobby… all of these textures evoke all of the comforting fall feels, don’t you think?

Lately I’ve really been loving the rustic and warm look of wood slices. I’ve been finding more and more ways to incorporate them into my home decor and they are especially perfect in fall and Christmastime. They fall perfectly into that raw and rustic category, yes?

If we’re already friends on the blog you know how I like to repurpose decor to transition it from season to season. Basically I’m a big fan of the old two-fer. Or three-fer or four-fer, etc. You guys, this two-fer is my favorite yet. It incorporates the raw texture of wood and cozy texture of a warm sweater to make for a perfect fall/winter decoration. It’s an extremely easy DIY so you could quickly and inexpensively whip several of these out for gifts as well.

Strolling through Hobby Lobby (my happy place!) looking for ideas for this project filled me with so much inspiration; I can think of so many other seasonal decor ideas that I could make with wood rounds… you’ll just have to stay tuned for those. 😉

Reversible Decor: Wood Slice DIY Fall Sign transitions to a DIY Christmas Sign

Supplies

For both sides:

  • Large Wood Round (try to get as even of a surface as possible on both sides for best results with ironing-on)
  • Cricut or other cutting machine
  • Weeder tool
  • Iron-on vinyl
  • Cricut EasyPress or iron
  • Scissors

For DIY Fall Sign side:

  • Assorted colors iron-on vinyl or iron-on appliqués
  • Decoupage and foam brush
  • Ribbon for bow (optional)

For DIY Christmas Sign side:

  • Pearl metallic paint and paint brush
  • Glitter iron-on vinyl
  • Winter White Silver Sparkle Tassel Ornament
  • Teal yarn
  • E6000 adhesive

Directions

For DIY Fall Sign side:

Cut out the phrase or images you would like on your DIY fall sign with a Cricut or other cutting machine. If you’re a Cricut user you can grab this Autumn design here. Note: When cutting words or numbers with a cutting machine, you will always need to mirror the image so that it is facing the right way once ironed on to the wood round.

Cricut Design Space - mirror image for iron-on

Peel away the lining and weed negative space. Alternatively you can also use pre-made iron-on transfers/appliqués.

Position your iron-on vinyl design onto the wood round where you’d like it.

DIY Fall Sign on Wood - Iron-on

Place a press cloth or piece of parchment paper over the design and press for 20 – 30 seconds with a heat press or iron. Glitter iron-on requires a hotter heat setting for about 30 seconds and regular and foil iron-on require a medium-high heat setting for 20 – 30 seconds.

Using the Cricut HeatPress with wood

Allow to cool for a couple of minutes before attempting to pull back the iron-on vinyl liner. If the image is left intact on the wood round, you can remove the remaining lining. If the iron-on vinyl appears to be lifting off of the wood, replace the press cloth or parchment paper and press again for another 10 seconds.

Once cooled, apply a generous coat of decoupage across the entire surface to seal the iron-ons and to provide a gloss finish. Once dry apply another layer.

I made a bow out of some Christmas ribbon to add to the top to add another layer of cozy texture.

For DIY Christmas Sign side:

Paint the inside (lightest) part of the wood round with a light pearl metallic acrylic paint with circular strokes. Allow to fully dry.

Cut out your iron-on designs/phrase and repeat the steps above to complete iron on.

Iron-on how-to!

To mix up the textures, spell out one or more of your words with yarn. And speaking of textures, wouldn’t you love to curl up with a throw made out of this cozy yarn while it snows outside? I know I would!

Glue yarn onto DIY Christmas Sign

One letter at a time, apply a thin strip of adhesive onto the wood round and position yarn to spell out your word. If your yarn word is cursive, apply a strip of adhesive right next to the part of the letter already glued down (as shown below when creating a w) and position the yard as closely as possible to the part already glued down.

I found this beautiful crystal and sequin tassel ornament at Hobby Lobby that made for perfect little snowflakes. Cut small pieces in varying sizes off of the tassel ornament and affix them onto the wood round with adhesive.

Stopping in from Think Tank Thursday. This is SUCH a cute idea. I really like those decorations you can flip around for seasons. I have to say though, I think the winter side is my favorite…I love Frozen. ๐Ÿ™‚
