Hello and Happy 1st Day of Summer! It’s felt like summer for awhile really, we kind of skipped spring here in Ohio. It was a couple months back that we had our first really warm day. I enjoyed it sitting on the patio all afternoon. Afterwards I looked in the mirror at my skin in horror as I realized that I had gotten a LOT of sun on my face and there were brown spots that I knew were more than my standard sun-magnified freckles. Yep, it was full on sun damage. How did this happen so suddenly? Well in reality, it was the culmination of many years spent in the sun and now the spots have come out to play. I used a moisturizer that morning with sunscreen (as I do every day) and thought I was ok because it was pretty cloudy.
Although my years of trying to tan my face are long gone, I realize now that I still haven’t been doing enough to protect my skin. Here’s what I was doing wrong in hopes that it will help you do it right:
- I didn’t protect my skin enough on cloudy days. I think we covered why that was a mistake above.
- Often I would apply my morning moisturizer/sunscreen and then go on about my day. Not enough. I needed to do better at re-applying sunscreen throughout the day, as even the sun exposure from getting in and out of the car a few times a day adds up.
- I relied on the old two-fer. I’m all about saving time so my sunscreen has always been a secondary ingredient in my moisturizer or makeup. While that’s well and good, again it’s not enough. I needed to be using a powerful, professional-grade sunscreen daily.
Well don’t worry, this story has a happy ending. About 6 weeks ago I was able to try Receutics Active Skin Repair Sun Care. Receutics is a dermatologist-strength skincare line that is available without a prescription exclusively at Rite Aid stores and online. The Broad Spectrum SPF 40 Sun Care not only provides high powered UVA/UVB protection but is also packed with antioxidants, vitamins and skin strengthening ingredients so it has great anti-aging benefits as well. Since I started using it I can see a visible difference in my sun damage and an overall evening of my skin tone. Yay!!!
Can you see the difference below (excuse the extreme close up!)? I still have a lot of freckles and the spots aren’t totally gone but they have faded for sure.
Some other basic things I do for extra protection are wear sunglasses, use lip balm or gloss with an SPF and wear a hat when I go to the beach or pool.
What are some of your favorite tips to protect your skin?
Thanks for reading and again happy summer!
