Hi there friends! I’m a little late with my fall decorating this year, but with good reason. See I decided that I wanted to switch up all of my orange pumpkins in favor of more muted tones so I’ve been busy painting pumpkins. Painting lots of pumpkins. I’m pretty happy with my planter full of pumpkins, I hope you like it too.
These decorative pumpkins are an easy DIY and very inexpensive to make. I had some craft pumpkins from and I mixed in a couple real ones for variance in texture and size (I’m not telling which are which though. 😉 ) Want to make your own decorative pumpkins? I made a variety of styles and here’s how you can replicate them:
DIY Decorative Pumpkins
Supplies (some affiliate links provided)
Craft Pumpkins (or real ones if you prefer)
MagiKote (if painting any styrofoam pumpkins)
Americana Decor Chakly Paint in Delicate
Americana Decor Chalky Paint in Vintage
DecoArt Dazzling Metallics in Glorious Gold
Paint brush/foam brush
Directions
1. If using styrofoam. If not, skip to step 2. Shake MagiKote well and spread mixture over styrofoam with a paint brush. Allow to dry and apply 2 more coats.
2. For vintage white-wash chalky decorative pumpkins:
Paint with 1 coat of Americana Decor Chalky Paint in Vintage (a grey-ish blue/green color); allow to dry and then top with a coat of Americana Decor Chakly Paint in Delicate (ivory) with little paint on the brush so that the Vintage shows through.
For chalky decorative pumpkins with an ombré glistening of gold:
Paint pumpkin with Americana Decor Chalky Paint in Vintage; allow to dry. Starting at the bottom, brush DecoArt Dazzling Metallics in Glorious Gold on just the outer ridges of pumpkin, with very little paint on the brush for subtle shimmer. Stop at the midway point of pumpkin (there should be so little paint on the foam brush that it will be a gradual fade),
For 2-tone chalky decorative pumpkins:
Paint pumpkin with Americana Decor Chalky Paint in Delicate; allow to dry. Brush Americana Decor Chalky Paint in Vintage to just the outer ridges of pumpkin.
For the exact reverse 2-tone chalky decorative pumpkins:
Paint pumpkin with Americana Decor Chalky Paint in Vintage; allow to dry. Brush Americana Decor Chakly Paint in Delicate to just the outer ridges of pumpkin.
I used a little bit of brown paint stippled on the stems of all of the decorative pumpkins.
So I finally finished all of the pumpkins and then spent awhile deciding where I wanted to put them. I decided on my entryway. The entryway is always the first place I like decorate for seasons/holidays since it’s the first place people see when they come in.
I found this beautiful (and free!) Happy Fall printable art from Jones Design Company that was the perfect finishing piece.
The entryway as far as I’ve gotten in my fall decorating so far. Do you like to decorate for fall? What are your favorite fall decorations?
Pin it for later!
