Welcome guests (or your Amazon packages!) with this adorable DIY Pineapple Doormat using a stencil and some outdoor paint!
I’m STILL loving the pineapple trend, how about you? I will have to restrain myself this summer from turning our house into a jungle of pineapples! One of the things I did to bring some of the tropics to Ohio is to make a Pineapple Doormat. I love that it’s the thing that people see right before coming into the house and it really evokes that summer feeling! I don’t know how summer is a feeling, it just is. Don’t you think? Pineapples and flamingos are like clicking my shoes and realizing I’m not in winter anymore.
This DIY Pineapple Doormat was super easy to make with a Cricut cutting machine and doesn’t require any artful painting skills (you can always count on that for any of my DIYs because let’s be real. A kindergartener’s drawings are better than mine). It brings such a fun pop of summer to your porch! Here’s all you need to make one for yourself:
DIY Pineapple Doormat
Supplies (affiliate links)
- Coco Coir 18″ x 30″ Natural Doormat
- Cricut Explore Air
- Pineapple image
- 12″ x 24″ StandardGrip Adhesive Cutting Mat
- Cricut Stencil Vinyl
- Spray Adhesive
- Americana Décor Outdoor Living paint in Harvest
- Americana Décor Outdoor Living paint in Lily Pad
- Paint brushes
Directions
1. First open the pineapple image, download it onto your computer and upload into Cricut Design Space. Customize the size if you’d like. I made my pineapple 15″ tall by 8″ wide.
2. After you have the design to your liking, get ready to cut! You will use the custom setting on the Cricut and then the Design Space app will have a drop down menu where you can select stencil material.
3. Place the center of the stencil on the center of the doormat (for mine that was at 15″). Even though the stencil material has adhesive, I would still recommend spraying the back with spray adhesive as it’s very difficult to get anything to stick to the coco coir material. Then lay something heavy on top of it for an hour or so.
Note: If you’re using your pineapple doormat outside it’s crucial to use a high quality outdoor paint. I love the rich pigments and wearability of DecoArt Americana Décor Outdoor Living paints. I used Harvest for the pineapple body and lily pad for the leaves.
4. Paint your pineapple! I used kids paint brushes because I knew I was going to abuse them baaad. As a former makeup artist, I’m a little cringe-y when I say this, but when you’re painting, really jam and smoosh the brush bristles into the coir fibers. Take out your aggressions on this thing. That way the color gets into all of the little nooks and crannies (like the butter in an english muffin). Side note: how did we talk about doormats, makeup brushes and english muffins all in one paragraph? Yeah I’m all over the place. It’s true.
5. After you complete the middle pineapple, you will then want to measure to get the halfway point between the middle pineapple and the mat edge. So for a 30″ mat that means the center point for the left and right pineapples was 7½” in from the right edge and the left edge.
6. Allow to dry overnight.
And that’s it! Are you ready to stand tall, wear a crown and be sweet on the inside? That saying is another reason I love pineapples! I mean, who doesn’t want to wear a crown??
So what do you think? Will a pineapple doormat be your craft this weekend? 😉 If you love the idea of accessorizing your porch with original and artsy DIY doormats check out this fun Geometric Doormat I made, too!

Hi! I am trying to make your fun project but I can’t seem to figure out how to download the pineapple file? The link sends me to Cricut and to a private saved file. How do I buy it or use it? Thank you for your help!
Lydia says
Hi JannaBeth! I have it saved as public so it shouldn’t be private, I’m so sorry about that! Here is the link for the stencil image so you can just download it and then upload it into Design Space. Let me know if this works for you and I’d love to see your doormat when you’re done! 🙂

Hey, love this project!
I just have one question, how long do they usually last?
Lydia says
Hi Anuka, thank you so much! With using the outdoor paint it should last well! I’ve used mine for 2 summers now and it still looks just like the photo. If you make one, I’d love to see it! 🙂

This is so fun! I love the pineapple trend, especially for summer. I have been wanting to paint a doormat, but just haven’t gotten around to trying it. Pinning this tutorial. Though I don’t have a cricut, any stencil should do. Found you at the Inspiration Monday Party from Scattered Thoughts of a Crafty Mom.
Lydia says
Thanks Alexandra! I had been wanting to for awhile too, so glad I finally did! Yep any stencil would work! I’d love to see what you make!
Cathy says

This is really cute Lydi! I’ve been hunting for painted doormat inspiration – thank you for the tips to use spray adhesive and outdoor paint! Would you mind me asking how this one held up? Our front porch is covered, but still gets a fair amount of weather and I am hoping the paint won’t flake off after a while.
Lydia says
Thanks Emily! It has held up WONDERFULLY! The Outdoor Living line from DecoArt is the bomb.com! I’m getting ready to do some more outdoor projects with it too so I hope you’ll stay tuned! 😉
April Soldano says
Did u use a transfer tape to get the stencil on it? I’m having a hard time with that part.
Lydia says
Hi April! No I didn’t, I just started at the bottom of the mat and slowly rolled the stencil in place on the mat. Let me know how it’s going! Feel free to comment here or you can email me too and send pictures and I can try to help! 🙂

So cute! I hope the pineapple craze sticks around awhile. I’ve used a pineapple stencil in several of my makeovers, one on a vintage desk secretary, and one on an ice cooler.
