If you’re looking for a unique and personalized gift idea for Dad, make a homemade gift of a DIY Leather Keychain with your Cricut machine. With 3 styles to choose from, there’s one perfect for any of the dad(s) in your life!
Creating has definitely been a silver lining these days more than ever. It’s something I can do that I am fully present and it temporarily takes my mind off of the chaos going on all around us. I’ve especially loved being able to make homemade gifts and cards. A few years ago I made these DIY Leather Key Fobs for Ryan’s and my leather anniversary. I thought it would be fun to make some for Father’s Day and once I started I couldn’t stop!
These leather keychains are a super fast project that make a unique and heartfelt gift for dad. With 3 designs, hopefully you can find one that’s perfect for the dad(s) or father figures in your life.

How to Make a Leather DIY Keychain for Dad
All of these DIY keychain ideas are super quick and simple to create and can be made with a Cricut Maker or Cricut Explore Air machine and can be made out of faux leather (like these), faux suede or fabric. You will just need to adjust your EasyPress heat settings accordingly for whichever type of material you use (you can find the settings for any type of material here).
Which of these DIY keychains for dad would you like to make?
#1 DAD Homemade Keychain
#1 Dad Keychain Supplies
- Cricut Maker or Explore Air 2
- #1 DAD DIY Keychain cut file
- Faux Suede Sampler
- Grey acrylic craft paint (I used Americana Acrylics in Zinc)
- Painters tape
- Stencil dauber
- Key rings
- Fabri-Tac Permanent Adhesive
Directions to Make #1 Dad DIY Leather Keychain
Open the #1 DAD leather keychain cut file in Cricut Design Space and customize as necessary. Click “Make It” and select Faux Suede for the cutting material.
Load red faux suede onto the cutting mat and cut. Peel the faux suede off of the mat and peel away the excess material inside of the letters.
I wanted the #1 Dad Key Ring to be color blocked so I placed some painters tape over the #1 so I could paint the “DAD” grey.
Position the keychain around the keyring and apply Fabri-Tac adhesive to the inside of the keychain on one side. Apply a very thin line of glue along the edges so there isn’t any leakage. Press the 2 sides together and place under a book or heavy object to fully flatten while it dries overnight.

Weed out the negative space from the iron-on. Set the EasyPress to 280º F. Allow to cool before peeling back the iron-on lining.
Position the established date wording on the inside of leather key chain in the heart. You can tape the keychain together to see exactly where the date should be positioned and then open it up again to press once positioned. Press for 30 seconds. Allow to cool before peeling back the iron-on lining.
Position the keychain around the keyring and apply Fabri-Tac adhesive to the inside of the keychain on one side. Apply a very thin line of glue along the edges so there isn’t any leakage. Press the 2 sides together and place under a book or heavy object to fully flatten while it dries overnight.
