I’m on a mission to get more organized! When we moved into our house about a year and a half ago, we were planning our wedding and remodeling, so with all of that going on, unfortunately a lot of stuff just got kind of tossed into wherever was convenient, which has now become very inconvenient. (I still can’t find a huge Costco container of Cinnamon that was brand new when we moved. It’s driving me crazy!)
As the process of remodeling is an ongoing one, my efforts to get organized are ongoing as well. (Like that euphemism? I’m basically saying it’s veeeeery slow! 😉 ) The first disaster area I tackled was our gift wrap, and now next up is my jewelry. This was the previous state of affairs on the jewelry front: I had the bulk of it in this hanging organizer I got a couple years ago at TJ Maxx. No beuno. It’s kind of like a jewelry abyss. There are tons of little pockets on both sides so when I am rushing around like a crazy woman to get ready (frequent), I can’t even really see what’s in there, and when looking for something specific I have to flip it back and forth to find the earrings that always end up being in the very last pocket I look in.
I’ve seen a lot of amazing storage solutions on Pinterest so decided I’d give a DIY jewelry organizer a try. I love the thought of being able to see all of my jewelry at a quick glance!
For earrings storage, I started with this large white frame that I bought at Hobby Lobby, and removed the glass and cardboard. (Hobby Lobby has wall frames on sale every other week. I mean literally). Next I headed to Lowe’s for some chicken coop wire (I NEVER thought I would find myself walking into a store asking for that!) 🙂
The wire was a little challenging to work with so I quickly realized I need to try to flatten it out a little before attempting to cut it. I rolled it out long enough to fit the frame, put the cardboard from the frame on top of it and sat a bar stool on top of it overnight. That made it much easier and stopped the rest of the roll from trying to attack my hand.
I used the cardboard that came in the frame as a pattern, then trimmed the chicken wire to size using wire cutters.
I laid the wire inside the frame and stapled it into the groove where the glass would usually sit.
So that’s it for the earring holder! Now for the dilemma of my necklaces, bracelets and earrings that don’t hang. I hadn’t really thought about that when ditching my previous storage method, aka the abyss. Oops. I had this small white shelf that resembles crown molding my mom gave me years ago so I decided to hang it under the earring frame.
I had some white self-adhesive felt from another project, which I cut to the size of the shelf to avoid the white finish getting scratched and chipped when I toss my jewelry on it.
I have a good amount of necklaces so I decided I’d hang some hooks from the shelf to store them. The rubber coated hooks I used easily screwed right in. A 4 pack of them cost around a buck at Home Depot.
I quickly realized I needed more than 4 hooks for my necklaces and bracelets. I had found these 2 aqua drawer pulls at Hobby Lobby months ago and fell in love with them, although I had absolutely no practical use for them at the time. I figured I would find something someday to use them for and the time has come! I drilled holes into the wall a little thinner than the drawer pull, so they screwed into the wall nice and secure.
So here’s the finished project. I hung the drawer pulls on either side of the shelf.
The shelf works well to house my post earrings, along with the rings and bracelets that I reach for most often.
And the necklace storage…
The good news is, in taking on this project I found some pieces that I had completely forgotten about, so it’s like they’re new all over again! 🙂
Whew, another organization project I can finally check off the list! Now what to tackle next… ?
Do you have any tips and tricks for getting organized? I would love all the help I can get! 😉
Thanks for reading!

Great idea Lydi! I just did a closet makeover and wish that I had read this first. I bought one of those bags to put my jewelry in.
