I love the look of the Modern Morphing trend in decor. I knew that I wanted to incorporate it into our lower level somehow but just wasn’t quite sure how to go about it. When I thought about the sharp contrast of colors I had the idea to add a chalkboard accent wall to our light gray walls.
First let me give you a little history on the lower level… when we were looking for houses a finished lower level was a must for Ryan. The house we fell in love with didn’t have one so we finished it when we moved in. It is now The Man Cave. He’s been asking for some decor help so I decided to make the chalkboard accent wall as a birthday surprise for him. I thought it would be a fun way to keep score for games and document the football schedule when the season comes.
I know what you’re probably thinking (because I was thinking the same thing!)… black and light contrast on the same wall?! That sounds like a bleed-through nightmare. I wouldn’t have even attempted it if I wasn’t using FrogTape painter’s tape. It has a patented PaintBlock® technology that instantly gels with the water in latex paint to form a barrier that seals the tape edges which helps me to get crisp, clean paint lines every time. Even with a black and light contrast!
When the Man Cave was designed, Ryan wanted an inset wall with a little ledge to house snacks, rest a drink, etc. while playing pool or other games. This is the wall before:
And here’s the process to get to the after!
Chalkboard Accent Wall Scoreboard
Supplies
- Pencil
- Tape measure
- Level
- FrogTape painter’s tape
- Burnishing tool (I used a wide craft stick)
- Black chalkboard paint
- Paint roller and tray
- Chalk marker or og chalk
Directions
1. Measure off area to be painted using a tape measure, pencil and FrogTape painter’s tape. Place tape just outside of pencil markings so that you paint over them.
2. Using a burnishing tool, your thumb or a craft stick, burnish the tape edges to active PaintBlock®. If using a flat object the way I did, press gently so that the tape doesn’t shift up or down.
3. Paint! Using a roller brush, paint a vertical coat of chalkboard paint followed by one horizontal coat and then a final vertical coat.
4. Remove tape immediately after applying final coat of paint by peeling directly back on itself (do not allow paint to dry before removing tape).
* Ok, pause on the directions… that deserves a close up! Look at this ultra-crisp line! ↓ There is no hiding a blurred line with black paint!
5. Allow paint to cure for 24 hours, then rub chalk across the entire surface to condition it and wipe off. (I also love the classroom authentic feel the smeared chalk gives the chalkboard!) I pulled out the FrogTape again to mark where I would write the chalkboard “header”. Since this will stay on I wanted it to be perfectly straight which my eyeball would likely not do that close up!
Ryan’s chalkboard accent wall chalkboard is ready for gaming!
I love that the chalkboard accent wall is a literal and figurative interpretation of the Modern Morphing trend… the visual is obviously morphed, but The Man Cave has also now morphed into a place for fun, games and chalk art! And every man cave needs a trophy right? 😉

I’m not a huge sports guy myself, but this is still pretty cool. I would likely do an epic chalk drawing on this! lol
