Create a beautiful outdoor end table with a stencil and some vibrant colored paint… it will become the focal point of your patio or porch!
Since having my baby in December, I don’t have the time to leisurely peruse thrift stores to find for my next up-cycle project. I’m loving that I can do virtual thrift store shopping on Facebook marketplace! Have you bought anything from there yet? I love to scroll it every once and awhile and often I find things I really need. That’s exactly what happened with this end table. I had been looking for an outdoor end table to place between our lounge chairs on the patio and this FB find was perfect.
Obviously this dark wood base and hammered brass tray top are not exactly outdoor end table material. I was challenged to create an outdoor decor project for the DecoArt blog and this was the perfect one. I transformed this drab table with some bright outdoor paint colors and a DIY Moroccan tile inspired stencil. It created an outdoor end table that I absolutely love! Here’s how you can make one of your own:

- End table in need of a makeover!
- DIY Moroccan style stencil or if you don’t want to DIY one you can use this one: Moroccan Tile Stencil
- Pouncer for stenciling
- Foam brush
- Americana Decor Outdoor Living in Adirondack
- Americana Decor Outdoor Living in Morning Glory
- HomeRight Finish Max Sprayer
- Sandpaper
- Reposition-able Spray Adhesive (optional)
- Envirotex Lite Pour-On Resin
Directions
If your end table is wood, lightly sand the surface. The top of this end table is a heavily textured metal tray so I poured on some resin to get a smooth surface for stenciling (you can find the tutorial for a smooth resin top here).
Wipe off the end table to make sure it’s free of dust and debris and apply 2 coats of Americana Decor Outdoor Living paint in Adirondack. I highly recommend using a paint sprayer to ensure a smooth application and to make it fast. The HomeRight Finish Max Sprayer is my absolute favorite. Allow to dry for 24 hours.
If your stencil is not adhesive like the custom stencil I created for this project, spray the back of the stencil with spray adhesive. Secure the stencil to the outdoor end table top.
Tap a stencil pouncer into Americana Decor Outdoor Living in Morning Glory and tap off the majority of the paint onto a plate. The stencil pouncer should be almost dry to ensure that excess paint doesn’t bleed under the stencil. With a dabbing motion, apply paint over the stencil. With stenciling it’s better to do 2 or 3 light coats to avoid paint bleed. Carefully peel back the stencil while the paint is still wet.
To add some more contrast, I painted the outer edge of the tray top with Morning Glory.
I added a coat of Envirotex Lite to the top of the tray to protect the design (you can find that tutorial here).
My outdoor end table is now ready to house my favorite refreshment, snack, book, phone or whatever else I need while I lounge on the patio!
