If you love the aroma of autumn as much as I do, put a batch of this fall stovetop potpourri and feel yourself drifting into the calm serenity of the season!
Hi there! I hope you’re having a great week so far. The weather here in Columbus has been exactly perfect. So often we seem to skip fall weather and go from hot to cold, but not this year. I’m so enjoying these mild temperatures and being able to open the windows and let the fresh air in! I can count on 2 hands the amount of times I’ve mentioned I love fall on the blog in the last month and all of the reasons why, but there is another reason that I forgot about until it came along unexpectedly… the smell!! I love the smells of fall, don’t you? They’re so cozy and comforting and just make me want to have a hot cider and curl up in a blanket and see you next spring.
I’ve seen so many stovetop potpourri recipes through the years and have tried several, but I haven’t been able to capture just exactly what I think fall smells like. Until now. Instead of stovetop potpourri I’m going to go ahead and call it heaven in a dutch oven. I highly recommend using a dutch oven because it conducts the heat so evenly that you don’t have to worry about your pan scorching the stovetop potpourri (we’re not going for campfire or burning smell here 😉 ). If you love the aroma of autumn as much as I do, put a batch of this on your stovetop (or in a crockpot) and feel yourself drifting into the calm serenity of fall!
Fall Stovetop Potpourri
The ingredients are based on using a dutch oven; if using a smaller pot you can scale down accordingly.
Ingredients
1 orange, thinly sliced
1 apple, sliced
2 – 3 cinnamon sticks
3 Â – 4 bay leaves
1 tablespoon whole cloves
4 cups apple cider or water
Directions
Add sliced apples and oranges to a dutch oven or saucepan; sprinkle bay leaves, cloves and cinnamon sticks on top.
Top with apple cider or water (the cider smells soooo good).
Bring to just boiling and reduce heat to low. Simmer all day, making sure to maintain liquid level (add more cider or water throughout the day).
Ahhh so cozy! I hope you enjoy!

Would apple cider vinegar be a good substitute for cider in this? I have heard it has healing properties.
