Hi, friends! I’m still working on making my laundry room/mud room more cozy and welcoming when we come home every day. Accumulating mail on the washer, dryer and/or counter doesn’t exactly elicit that cozy welcoming feeling, so I’ve been looking for a solution that would be practical, but also fit into the style of my newly renovated laundry room.
I found this hanging mail organizer at a thrift store still brand new in the box. While it doesn’t go with the style of my laundry room, I knew with some paint it could be a perfect fit. I have some beautiful grey and white striped Turkish towels in baskets in the laundry room so I decided to mimic that striped pattern in the mail organizer.
Here’s how you can easily make your own mail organizer (and how to get perfectly painted stripes for any project!):
Grey & White Striped Mail Organizer
Supplies
- Mail organizer (here is a great DIY version by Jamie Costiglio if you’d like to DIY one)
- Americana Decor Satin Enamels paints in Pure White and Smoke Grey
- Painters tape
- Paint brush
- Foam brush for stenciling
Directions
Spackle any holes and allow to dry. Lightly sand entire surface of mail organizer.
Apply 2 – 3 coats of Americana Decor Satin Enamels in Pure White (this is the same paint and color that I used on the shelves that we made for the laundry room. Lightly sand in between coats.
Tape off varying sized stripes with painters tape. Apply 2 – 3 thin coats of Americana Decor Satin Enamels in Smoke Grey in between painter’s tape with a foam stencil brush. You want to keep the application on these coats light so that the paint doesn’t bleed under the tape. Start in the middle of the stripes to further help prevent bleeding as well.
After final coat of paint, immediately remove painter’s tape.
No more mail piles to ruin the cozy vibe of our laundry room! 😉
