My DIY Tote Bag and Makeup Bag gift ideas are sponsored by Hobby Lobby. As always, all ideas and opinions share are my own.
You could say I have a bit of a bag obsession… tote, hand, makeup, travel… any type of bag is game. Because I have more ideas than time (or space!), I love to design and make bags for friends for gifts. Hobby Lobby has a huge variety of DIY giftable bags that are perfect for decorating to make personalized and unique gifts. I have a couple of people on my Christmas list this year that will be getting these DIY bags. So no peeking friends! 😉
For my first project, I used a natural tote bag to make a Farmer’s Market DIY tote bag for my Fixer-Upper lovin’, farmer’s market-going friend.
For the second, I have a friend who loves mermaids (and also shares my bag obsession, so even though I’ve made her several before, I’m pretty sure this one will be her favorite) so I made her a two-sided Mermaid makeup bag.
These are so simple to make but make such a wonderful gift since they are 100% customizable and personalized.
Farmer’s Market DIY Tote Bag
Supplies
- Natural Tote Bag
- Farmer’s Market and Farm Animals Stencils
- Black multi-surface paint
- Stencil spray adhesive
- Stencil brush
Directions
Press tote bag to ensure it is free of wrinkles. Lay out stencils to determine positioning and secure first stencil design to the tote bag with stencil spray adhesive. Dip stencil brush into black paint and tap off excess onto a plate or paper towel (the brush shouldn’t be saturated with paint). Tap brush with black paint over stencil design and build up as necessary. To make a vintage-y, worn look, don’t worry about the color being uniform throughout the design.
Remove stencil, allow paint to dry and then proceed with the remaining designs following the same process.
This one will be hard to give up, I think I’ll have to make one for myself too. I know, I know, I said I don’t need anymore bags. 😉
DIY Mermaid Makeup Bag
Supplies
- Canvas Zipper Pouches
- Cricut Maker or other cutting machine
- Iron-on Vinyl
- Weeder tool
- Press cloth or parchment paper
- Cricut EasyPress or iron
- Turquoise Suede Leather Cord
- Mermaid at Heart Silver Charm
Directions
Choose the design for your makeup bag and create it in Cricut Design Space or other cutting machine software. If you use a Cricut and would like to use this design, you can find it here. Cut out the design with iron-on vinyl. Remember to flip the text and place the shiny side of the iron-on material face down on the cutting mat.
Weed out the negative material from the iron-on vinyl with a weeder tool.
Position the iron-on designs onto the makeup bag, place parchment paper or press cloth over design and press for 20 – 30 seconds.
Cut off the canvas zipper pull from the makeup bag and thread the suede cord through the zipper pull, leaving equal lengths on each end. Thread the charm onto the cord. Tie several knots moving down the length of the suede cord.
I’m not sure which side is my favorite, they’re both pretty cute, don’t you think?
